Odinga African Union On Côte D'Ivoire, Ghana

Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, met with President of Ghana on Wednesday on the crisis in Ivory Coast after a failed attempt to mediate the latest standoff.

West African nations have threatened to use force so strong Ivory Coast Laurent Gbagbo did not relinquish power, but its neighboring country Ghana has ruled out sending troops and oppose military intervention.

"I am in Ghana to advise the President on the mediation efforts so far and as for advice on how to resolve the Ivorian crisis," Odinga, the African Union mediator for Ivory Coast , told reporters.

"Ghana is a major player in Africa, and should be done to solve this problem."

Odinga then held closed-door discussions with Ghana President John Atta Mills.

"Ghana is committed to the mediation efforts of ECOWAS that the crisis must be resolved as soon as possible," Mills said earlier, referring to the 15-member Economic Community of West African States.

Odinga left Abidjan on Wednesday morning saying they had not achieved a breakthrough in the political crisis and that time is running out for a negotiated solution.
