Next Stop of Giffords: Rehabilitation Hospital Is Texas

The next step in the recovery of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is launching this week, when he moved to a rehabilitation hospital in Houston.

Her husband and doctors plan to update on his condition Thursday, a day after the public learned that Gifford has risen from his hospital bed to assist.

"We had to get him out of bed again, and we were able to stay on aid," Dr. Peter Rhee, Tucson's University Medical Center trauma chief, told CNN affiliate KVOA. "He has the strength to carry them, to lift his head, and these ... I see improvements every day."

Gifford husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, intends to provide "information on his condition and the next stage of his treatment plan" at a conference Thursday, according to a statement from University Medical Center.

Giffords mother, Gloria, told friends and family in an e-mail this week that her daughter moved to a rehabilitation center in Houston on Friday.

Gifford office confirmed the move Wednesday, saying that "the exact date of withdrawal will depend on the health of the member of Congress."

Giffords was shot in the head in an attempted mass murder and the shooting that killed six and wounded 13 in a Safeway supermarket in Tucson on January 8. Investigators have accused Jared Lee Loughna in the attack.

A federal grand jury indicted Wednesday on Loughner three counts of attempted murder. The indictment Loughner, 22, of Gifford and try to kill two of his assistants, Ron Barber and Pamela Simon.
