Ben Ali barred from politics while in Saudi

The ousted President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was banned from political activity in his country when he is home in Saudi Arabia Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal said on Wednesday.

"This action (housing Ben Ali) or lead to activity in Tunisia in the kingdom ... There are conditions and no action in this regard will be allowed," said Faisal Saudi television.

Saudi Arabia has maintained a total blackout of the activities of Ben Ali since his arrival Saturday morning in the city of Jeddah on the Red Sea, with six members of his family.

In the statement of the Palace, Saudi Arabia said on Saturday the move was "out of great concern in the face of brotherly Tunisian people and to support the security and stability in the country."

Ben Ali has fled to Saudi Arabia in disgrace after 23 years of iron-fisted rule, after a wave of protests in which dozens of people were killed.
