Vandals rip heads off two mummies in Egyptian Museum

Vandals ripped the heads two mummies and relics fell on the floor of the Cairo Egyptian Museum, the country's antiquities chief said Sunday.

But a group of about nine people could not steal one of the museum's collection, according to Zahi Hawass, Secretary General of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities.

Aspiring thieves who broke into the museum Friday about eighteen years old, was arrested and jailed, said Hawass.

The museum has stepped up security measures and is now guarded by the Egyptian army, he said.

The antiquities chief, said that 10 small objects were also damaged, but can be restored.

The Egyptian Museum is located in Cairo, Tahrir Square, which is a center of anti-government demonstrations.
