Missing sailor's body recovered in Gulf of Oman

The body of a U.S. Navy sailor, who was reported missing from a ship on Tuesday, was recovered Wednesday during search and rescue operations in the Gulf of Oman, the U.S. 5th Fleet said.

The sailor failed to report to watch Tuesday aboard the USS Halsey, the military said in a statement. "After a search of the ship, a man overboard was called away."

British and American forces searched the waters for the soldier, and aircraft were utilized.

The sailor is a female, a U.S. military official told CNN Tuesday.

The sailor's name was withheld pending notification of relatives, the 5th Fleet said.

The 5th Fleet is based in Manama, Bahrain. The USS Halsey, a destroyer, is deployed to the fleet to conduct maritime security operations, according to the statement.
