A former member of Congress of the United States was among a group of U.S. lawyers who accompany the former dictator of Haiti, Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier, as he spoke in the capital Friday.
Former Republican Congressman Bob Barr said he will not serve as counsel for Duvalier, but it is in Port-au-Prince to listen, help and be the voice of the international community to Duvalier.
Barr represented Georgia's 7th district SU House of Representatives, 1995-2003, and was the Libertarian Party presidential candidate in 2008. He currently practices law and serves as a consulting firm based in Atlanta.
"We were asked by the former president and his family to help with their efforts," Barr said in Port-au-Prince.
He represents the Duvalier Georgia along with two other lawyers - Ed Margera and Mike Puglisi - the opinion of Barr's website.
"This is really more a personal journey to help Duvalier and his family," Barr told CNN affiliate WXIA before leaving Port-au-Prince.
Duvalier has astonished the world by suddenly returning to Haiti on Sunday after 25 years in exile in France.
Police escorted the Duvalier law on Tuesday when the judge questioned him for hours. He faces charges of embezzlement and bribery charges, had hundreds of millions of dollars to the national treasury.
Human rights organizations have mounted pressure on the Haitian authorities to take charges of rights violations Duvalier.
Human Rights Amnesty International said Friday that the Haitian authorities have launched an investigation into alleged crimes against humanity committed under the Duvalier regime 15 years.
His first public statement after his unexpected return Duvalier said Friday he wanted to be in Haiti to help rebuild the country after the devastating earthquake last year. He does not mention any political ambition.
"The desire to participate in your pages in this effort of national reconstruction is more important than any problems they may encounter. Convenient it is not important. The Essential (thing) for me is with you," Duvalier said.
Barr "represent" Duvalier "to bring his message of hope for the world", the website of the former Republican Congress, he said.
